38mm dance poles are the slimmest form of Dance Pole available. 40mm or 45mm poles are more common, but 38mm poles can be slightly easier to grip with your hands. This makes them a good choice for dancers with small hands or have extreme difficulty getting a good grip on the pole.
However, 38mm poles can be harder to grip with other parts of your body with more surface area. Tricks that require you to grip with your legs (cross-knee or cross-ankle release) can be more painful when using a slimmer pole like this.
Until the mid-2010s, it was unheard of to find a 38mm dance pole unless it was custom made, but now they’re more popular.
